Doctors of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, under the interns’ horsemanship training have protested the non-payment of their six-month salaries by the management of the health institution.

The aggrieved workers who staged the protest within the hospital premises Friday said the management needs to come out clean on why their six months salaries have not been paid after receiving their employment letters.

They called on the UCTH to consider their plight as urgent and important, saying “a hungry doctor cannot give effective and efficient service to patients”.

Reacting to the protesters’ demand, the Chief Medical Director, CMD of UCTH, Professor Ikpeme Ikpeme, said their demand was being looked into and that the major challenge has to do with administrative bottlenecks which were not peculiar to the UCTH alone.

The peaceful protest was guarded by the police and other security operatives in the hospital to forestall being highjacked by hoodlums.
