Nigeria’s House of Representatives has asked its Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream to carry out a comprehensive audit of funds previously utilised in the rehabilitation, repair, and maintenance of the Port Harcourt refinery and other refineries in the country and their performance indicators.

The lawmakers said the move is to ensure transparency and accessibility in the proposed rehabilitation exercise of the nation’s refineries.

Following public outcry that greeted the Federal Government’s approval of 1.5 billion dollars for immediate rehabilitation work on the Port Harcourt refinery, the House said it will ensure judicious use of the proposed sum of money, considering the fact that the facility has failed to perform after years of rehabilitation, repair, and maintenance.

The House Committee on Petroleum Resources Downstream is to examine the performance bond, assurance, warrantee and guarantees put in place for operating and maintaining the plants after commissioning.

The lawmakers also asked the Federal Government to grant licence and provide incentives for the building and construction of modular refineries.

And In marking World Tuberculosis Day, the House asked the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to ensure effective implementation of tuberculosis related policies, including improving government funding.

Meanwhile, a bill for the establishment of federal polytechnic Rano, Kano State, scaled second reading. The bill seeks to provide full time courses of instruction in different fields of studies.
