The national assembly in Lesotho has passed a new law – the Diamond Amnesty Law which allows for persons in undocumented posession of rough diamonds to declare it before January 31st 2021.

The act was recommended by Kimetso Mathaba the current chairperson of the Natural Resource, Tourism and Land Cluster committee who disclosed that the dealers would not be arrested but given the opportunity to sell of their finds in the open market through an auction.

According to Mathaba, this new regulation exists to grant amnesty to all persons with illegally gotten diamonds i.e those without licenses

Based on reports, this will allow the government an opportunity to clear the illegal diamonds off the black market
