The Judicial Panel of Inquiry into complaints of Police brutality and extrajudicial killings in Ebonyi State, southeast Nigeria has submitted its report to Governor Dave Umahi after about eleven months of listening to testimonies.

The panel headed by retired Justice Alloy Nwankwo recommended a total of 189.2 million Naira as compensation to victims or families.

The Chairman of the Panel, while submitting the report, said uniform compensation was awarded in cases of extrajudicial killings, while in other cases of brutality, compensations recommended were made on the circumstances and peculiarities of each case.

The panel, which was inaugurated on the 20th of October, 2020, by Governor Dave Umahi to investigate allegations of police brutality had several public sittings to listen to heart-rending stories of killings and brutalities perpetrated by security operatives on citizens.

The setting up of the panel followed nationwide protests by Nigerian youths which grounded socio-economic activities in major cities across the country.

Justice Nwankwo, a retired Chief Judge of the State, wants the Governor to consider and implement the recommendations.

Governor Umahi thanked the Committee for what he said is a thorough job, assuring that his administration would do justice to it.
