CBN releases statement over circulating fake banknotes

Over the weekend, pictures and videos of 2,000 and 5,000 naira banknotes circulated on the internet. It was rumoured that some people are in possession of these banknotes in the country.

The Central Bank of Nigeria, however, took to its Twitter page to debunk these rumours. The Tweet stated that the pictures and videos of the banknotes making rounds on the internet is fake.

Videos and pictures of purported circulation of N2,000:00 and N5,000:00 banknotes are false and fake. Members of the public are advised to disregard such falsehood and to report anyone found in possession of such banknotes to the law enforcement agencies

Also, the apex bank stated that anyone seen with those banknotes should be reported to law enforcement agencies.
