Buhari calls on NASS to pass National Water Bill

President Muhammadu Buhari has called on the National Assembly to as a matter of urgency, pass the National Water Bill before it, to ensure proper development of the water sector, to ensure that Nigerians have access to a portable and clean water supply.

President Buhari said this while commissioning the Zobe regional water project.

He said his administration has entered into so many agreements and partnerships to ensure that the country meets up with the Sustainable Development Goal 2030, on water supply and sanitation for the populace.

According to President Buhari, his administration is committed to giving Nigerians the best in the water sector to meet up the Sustainable Development Goal.

He added that access to potable water supply, sanitation, and hygiene are part of the social-economic development of any nation, hence, the present administration will strive to achieve its calling on the cooperation of the National Assembly on the water bill before it.

The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, noted that, for the completion of the Zobe Regional Water Project, the ministry spent about 22 billion Naira, which was divided into two phases.

He said the phase 1A and 2 of the project were for the Federal Government to construct water production and transmission, which included the construction of a 75 million litre per day conventional water treatment plant with pumping stations, reservoirs, trunk mains, power supply, construction of about 65 kilometres of 800 millimetres and 700 diameters ductile iron pipeline from Dutsinma to Katsina town and construction of a booster station at Tsanni.

On the part of the state government, Governor Aminu Masari assured of the completion of phase 1B, which involves laying pipes to Karofi, Kafin-Soli, Kankia, Radda, and Charanchi, which will commence soon.

The Zobe water project has come alive since its conception about 25 years ago and was abandoned by successive governments.

In another development, President Buhari has also commissioned the 50 kilometres Dustinma-Tsaskiya road constructed by the administration of Governor Masari and cost the government a total of 3 billion Naira.
