The public hearing yesterday with Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and the European Union turned out to be a very interesting conversation. It started out with Zuckerberg taking responsibility for all the lapses in privacy infringement rights that users of the product have experienced and further commitments made by the company to prevent recurrence.

He acknowledges that starting the company from the Dorm room and growing it to such a large scale, he didn’t anticipate the misuse and abuse of user information which the company experienced as the sole purpose of the product; Facebook was to connect people.

He highlighted that unlike before when they were largely unsuspecting, they are more keenly aware and better prepared to combat manipulation of data using new AI tools, enforcing that the company was still keen on its social goal of connecting more people.
