Shortly after US President, Donald Trump reimposed 10% tariffs on Aluminium-based products on August 16 to protect the United States from a surge in imports, Canada has disclosed similar measures will be taken against aluminium products from the states.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland made the announcements that countermeasures will be put in place by September 16 to allow for consultations. Read her statements below

“At a time when we are fighting a global pandemic… a trade dispute is the last thing anyone needs – it will only hurt the economic recovery on both sides of the border. However, this is what the U.S. administration has chosen to do,” said Freeland.

“We do not escalate and we do not back down,” she said later, variously describing the U.S. decision as “entirely unacceptable,” absurd and ludicrous.
