Mauritius has declared a state of environmental emergency after an Oil Spill from Japanese-owned ship, Okiyo Maritime Corporation and Nagashiki Shipping Co. Ltd stranded off the coast.
The ship was carrying as much as 4000 tonnes of fuel and cracks have now appeared in the ship’s hull which leads to oil spill leaving as many as 1.3 million residents and living organisms across the Indian Ocean at risk
The Prime Minister Pravand Jugnauth disclosed that the country has neither the resources or capacity to refloat stranded ships thus is requesting help from France, its closest neighbour.
Currently, 400 sea booms have been channelled to control the spill and the state police is also investigating the root cause of the spill
