Ese Brume has won Nigeria’s first medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. She leapt 6.97m in her first jump to win the bronze medal in the women’s long jump, the first time Nigeria is winning a medal in athletics after Blessing Okagbare’s silver medal at the Beijing Olympics.

Malika Mihambo of Germany won gold with a 7:00m leap while Britney Reese of the United States did 6.97 to claim silver.

In the sprints, Divine Oduduru qualified for the semi-final of the men’s 200 metres.

Oduduru finished in 20.36 seconds behind Rasheed Dwyer of Jamaica who returned 20.31 seconds to win heat 1. He would be looking to compete for a medal in the 200 metres having been disqualified in the men’s 100 metres for a false start.

Meanwhile, Patience Okon George placed seventh in the women’s 400m returning in  52.41 seconds.

The men’s 400m hurdles produced stunning results as the gold and silver medalists both surpassed the world record mark.

Karsten Warhlom from Norway broke his own world record set barely a month ago returning in 45.94 seconds to claim gold while Rai Benjamin from the United States won silver in 46.17 seconds while Alison Dos Santos got the bronze medal for Brazil in 46.72, 0.02 seconds short of the world record.
