Tsunekazu Takeda, the head of Japan’s Olympic Committee (JOC) is stepping down from his role over corruption allegations relating to the awarding of the 2020 Games to Tokyo.
Takeda is being investigated by French prosecutors over claims a 2 million Euros bribe was paid to secure Tokyo’s winning bid.
Tokyo had beaten Madrid and Istanbul in 2013 to win the hosting rights to the 2020 Olympic Games.
Tsunekazu Takeda has denied any wrongdoing, same as the Japanese government that has always insisted its Tokyo bid is clean. and will not seek an extension in his role when his tenure ends in June.
He is a veteran Olympian who competed as a show jumper in 1972 and 1976 and has been the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee since 2001.
