Polyandry in South Africa is stirring up Parliament!

Members of Parliament are unable to reach common ground on the new polyandry law in South Africa that allows a woman to marry more than one husband.

The new law is supposed to give women a similar right to their male counterpart to have more than one partner. The new legislation has however ripped the parliament in two as strong oppositions have surfaced, some even calling for a retractment of the law.

“I am very concerned by the provision in the Green Paper of the Marriage Act where women are allowed to take more than one husband. You can imagine when a child is born, more DNA tests will be needed to discover who the father is. That backlog is going to grow! The problem is only going to get worse…”

Garief Hendricks

Concerns such as paternity feuds were raised while opposing voices have claimed it is a dishonour to refuse women the right to have more than one spouse should they choose to. Things got really heated up.

I have to interrupt – the last speaker, who is not honourable, has insulted every woman in this country by rejecting a female’s right to have multiple husbands – when men can have multiple wives. It is not right, in 2021, to have people in Parliament say disgraceful things like that. He will be referred to the Ethics Committee.”

“The only woman who could possibly agree with him in this country, is his own wife.”

Natasha Mazzone

Concerning a DNA test is widely available it becomes a cause of wonder as to why this is such a huge deal.
