Bima Enagi, a senator representing Niger South, just introduced a bill banning the importation and selling of generators in Nigeria.

According to Bima Enagi, the implementation of the ban has to do with the recent bill passed titled “A Bill for an Act to Prohibit / Ban the Importation of Generating Sets to Curb the Menace of Environmental (Air) Pollution and the Facilitate the Development of the Power Sector.”

This new bill not only bans the importation of generators but it also, it prohibits the buying and selling of generators everywhere in the country.

Henceforth, anyone caught by authorities either importing, buying or selling generators will be arrested and be sentenced to a minimum of 10 years in prison.

This bill has also ordered every individual in Nigeria to stop using generators, which run on either petrol or diesel in their individual homes with immediate effect. Individuals caught will face the consequences.

There are some services excluded from the ban of generators such as,

·        Research Institutions.

All individuals who require exclusion from the ban must obtain permission from the minister in charge of power.
