Saudi sisters hiding in Hong Kong granted asylum, says lawyer

Two Saudi sisters hiding in Hong Kong have been granted asylum in an unknown city, according to their lawyer.

“The sisters and their family went into hiding in Hong Kong for six months from Saudi authorities for denouncing Islam.

“These strong, brave and determined young women have finally been able to secure humanitarian visas to a third country,’’ lawyer Michael Vidler said in a statement.

For sake of safety, he did not release the location of the laides tagged as “Reem and Rawan”.

The sisters, aged 22 and 18 have been hiding in Hong Kong since September, and are set to leave by April 8, the deadline set by Immigration authorities.

Reem and Rawan could face a death penalty if they ever return to Saudi Arabia just because they renounced Islam.
