North and South Korea have agreed to a joint bid for the 2032 Olympic Games in a statement issued at a news conference in Pyongyang, North Korea on Wednesday, following a meeting between the North Korean leader, Kim Jong Un, and South Korean president, Moon Jae-in.

The statement also said they had agreed to “participate jointly” at international competitions including the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

If the bid is successful it will bring the Summer Olympics to the Korean peninsula for the first time since Seoul hosted the Games in 1988.

India, Australia, China and Indonesia have also expressed interest in hosting the 2032 Games.

The two nations marched together under a unified flag at the opening ceremony for the Winter Olympics in February and competed as one team in ice hockey.
