The Nigerian government has praised the United States government for recognizing the country’s efforts to run a liberal, free, and multi-religious state, as stipulated in the country’s constitution.
Nigerian officials said the US did the right thing when it removed Nigeria from its list of nations with religious freedom concerns, calling the decision fair and just.
Nigeria’s Information Minister, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said in a statement made in Paris, France, on Thursday that the government does not engage in religious freedom violations or have a policy of religious persecution, as he did when the country was placed on the list last year.
Nigeria, according to Alhaji Mohammed, carefully guards religious freedom, which is established in the country’s constitution, and takes any infringements seriously.
“We will continue to ensure that every Nigerian has the freedom to practice his or her religion or belief without impediment,” the Minister added, praising religious leaders in the country for their efforts to promote religious harmony.
It should be remembered that the United States placed Nigeria and six other nations on a special watch list in 2020 for committing or tolerating serious violations of religious freedom.
Nigeria, on the other hand, is not on the list of countries targeted for religious infractions in 2021.
