The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has begun the supervision of more polling units in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Othman Ajedagba, told reporters in Mararaba that the exercise is being carried out to decongest the polling units during elections.

He also hinted that the exercise is being done ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Karu is a satellite town located in the suburb of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and it is highly populated.

According to statistics, Karu is also the highest revenue-generating local government area in the state.

As a result of this,  during elections, polling units are mostly overcrowded, leading to impatience by voters which is the usual cause of violence during elections.

To curtail this, the INEC has decided to increase the polling units from 121 to over 300.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner, Ajedagba, said the exercise is being carried out for the commission to improve its services to the people.

Ajedagba said in June, the Continuous Voter’s Registration, CVR, will commence and called on well-meaning Nigerians to come out and register for the coming elections.
