An epidemiologist and director center for infectious disease research Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano, professor Isah Abubakar, says human and environmental factors in addition to the new variant of the COVID-19 are responsible for the spike of coronavirus pandemic during the second wave of the deadly disease.

Professor Abubakar told reporters that his center runs nearly 200 tests per day from samples received from the kano state tasks force on covid-19, hospitals, and individuals.

Between 20th December 2020 and 7th January 2021, kano state recorded 356 new positive cases of covid19 out of 58979 samples tested. Even when community testing was conducted during the lockdown period the numbers were not as high as is obtained now.

Professor Abubakar said the Harmattan season associated with flu and the impression that the virus no longer spread after the ease of lockdown explain the rise in infection as people do not observe prevention protocols.

On the càpacity of the center to meet demands for testing, the director said the center is equipped with new machines. Testing is being run at other centers located at Aminu Kano teaching hospital and Muhammad Buhari specialist hospital.
