It is another year for Nigeria and its citizens to celebrate 22 years of unobstructed civilian rule.

Speaking on how we have fared as a nation from 1999 till date, some residents in Warri, Delta State, said that the country’s numerous challenges and the present state of things leave much to be desired in its 22 years of democratic rule.

The Nigerian Democracy at 22, to some people, is only a mere reminder of another year under civilian rule.

However, when compared to the military era, many prefer the democratic form of government.

Assessing how Nigeria has fared in the past twenty-two years under democratic rule, some residents of Warri described the country’s poor economy, worsening insecurity, and frequent human rights abuses as leaving reasonable doubts in their minds over the true meaning of what democracy was all about.

Democracy is a form of government that should be enjoyed by every citizen but judging from the views of most Nigerians, the experience has been different.
