The Nigerian Infectious Disease Society, NIDS, says the Federal Government and other concerned agencies such as the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, are not proactive enough to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 pandemic should there be more cases of outbreak outside Lagos State.

President of the NIDS, Professor Dimie Ogoina, while briefing reporters in Yenagoa, on the society’s observations, also expressed worry that the spread of misinformation, fear and panic among the populace could hamper on factual, science-based and clear-sighted decisions on the outbreak.

The continual spread of COVID-19 pandemic with its attendant effects running into sociocultural, economic, and political loses on a daily basis with no end in sight, has continually stirred a scare across countries of the world.

The global health hazard now records 12 positive affected cases in Lagos, Nigeria with more suspected ones counting.

The NIDS is worried that most states in Nigeria are yet to be adequately prepared to combating the pandemic should there be more outbreak.

President of the NDIS, among other recommendations, wants the Federal Government and the NCDC to beam more searchlight on land and sea borders as likelihood of the importation of the virus into Nigeria.

He also advised all key players to adopt established preventive measures from verifiable and reliable sources in the bid of mitigating the global health pandemic.
