An estimated 19,610 expired doses of AstraZeneca vaccines have been set on fire in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe. The move comes after the Africa Centre for Disease Control confirmed that the shots were no longer effective in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The vaccines manufactured by the Serum Institute of India expired on the 13th of April, 2021.

According to the African nation, publicly disposing of the vaccines will foster public trust and encourage residents to come out and get vaccinated.

The incineration was carried out at the Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe

Currently, 330,000 Malawians have been vaccinated.
