A wastewater plant project in Kampala, the Bugolobi Wastewater Treatment Plant, has been unable to produce the much-needed electricity it has been designed to due to low levels of methane.

A spokesperson from the water ministry has disclosed that this is due to the lack of methane from the fecal matter of the residents.

According to Dr. Florence Grace Adongo, the food consumed by residents is lacking something which is why methane is not getting produced.

The plant, reputed to be the largest of its kind in East Africa, is capable of processing 45 million liters of wastewater on a daily basis. It was established as part of Uganda’s government effort in preserving the quality of water in the Inner and Outer Murchison Bay area of Lake Victoria.

It remains unclear how the government seeks to address the challenge.
