A student at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York stripped to her underwear to make her dissertation presentation after her Professor criticised her for being inappropriately dressed.
Letitia Chai’s lecturer made a comment about her student’s shorts being too short when Letitia decided to protest against this disapproval by taking off her clothes for her presentation which was streamed live on Facebook.
Letitia, whose teacher had told her that she should have dressed in a more conservative manner out of respect for her audience, prevailed on her classmates and online viewers to join her in this protest by stripping as well, in order to take a stand against being made to feel insecure about their appearance for the comfort of others.
When challenged about what her mum would think of her outfit, Letitia was quoted to have stated that she felt her mum would have approved as she is herself a “feminist, gender, sexuality Professor who has dedicated her life to the empowerment of people in all gender identities”.
Following the incident, Letitia’s College professor insisted that she was not forcing her ideas of morality on her but gave her students the freedom to reflect on their actions and decide for themselves what is appropriate or not.
While most of Letitia’s classmates expressed their support for her stand for the rights of women, they also stood up for their Lecturer whom they said was an outstanding teacher who was unfortunately misquoted in many of the reports on the incident.
