abortions in china

As a means to undo the one-child policy, China is now looking to clamp down on abortions that are not medically recommended. The Chinese Government announced just yesterday amidst a plethora of sweeping changes, that it would be looking to reduce abortions.

While details on what a non-medical abortion entails remain vague, the Chinese government believes this will help increase the birthrates. There have been many attempts to reverse the impact of the one-child policy.

China currently has a rapidly declining population as younger women are less interested in having kids, also the older more densely populated generation are in the majority. Concerns such as the cost of raising a child in a harsh economic climate it not being a priority or added responsibility. The country seems to be in a crunch to change the narrative.

The move has been frowned upon by human rights groups who not only criticized the one-child policy which went on for forty years but warns that this may negatively impact women’s health in China and ultimately eroding women’s rights to meet economic targets.
