Algerian Scholar who offended Islam granted Bail

An Algerian Scholar who was handed a 3-year jail term earlier today has now been granted bail.

Said Djabelkhir who wrote that the sacrificing of sheep predates the religion of Islam and also challenged the marriage of pre-adolescent girls in Muslim societies apparently overstepped the Algerian law.

The law allows for any person who offends the Prophet or questions the teachings of Islam to be slapped with a three to five year prison term as is the case for Said.

Said has through his lawyers revealed that he plans to appeal the verdict that is devoid of evidence and doesn’t assert any real offense as he only provided evidences based on research.

In addition, the allegations against him were purely testimonial in nature and did not have factual evidences. Said paid the sum of 50,000 dinars as fine.
