Akpabuyo/Bakassi Youths Protest In Calabar Over 12 Months Black Out

What could have led to another ENDSARS protest was on Wednesday averted by the security agencies in Calabar, the Cross River State Capital as youths from Akpabuyo and Bakassi stormed the headquarters of Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company (PHEDC), demanding an end to over one-year blackout in the two local Government Areas despite paying their monthly estimated bills.

Security Agencies, including the Nigerian Police, Army, Civil Defence and DSS, however, came to the rescue of the swelling crowd with persuasive words that later forestall breakdown of law and order.

The protesting youths, who barricaded the entrance of the PHEDC, carried placards with various inscriptions, locked out the staff of the electricity distribution organization.

Joel Henshaw and Jonathan Osang who spoke for the protesting youths said urgent attention is needed from various government agencies.

Addressing Journalists after a closed door meeting with the PHEDC Management, Permanent Secretary in charge of security in Cross River State,Alfred Mboto, commended the youths for listening to security operatives, assuring them that all issues raised will be resolved amicably and instantly too.

Following the protest, other PHEDC facilities in Calabar were quickly shut down by its management to avoid attack and any act of vandalism,a development some residents said, if not reconsidered may lead to total black out in the Cross River State Capital.
