Zimbabwe: Govt Restores Internet, Maintains Freeze On Facebook, Twitter

President Mnangagwa has finally restored the internet connectivity in Zimbabwe, although the government is yet to release the directive for connectivity on social media sites to be restored.

Tensions still remain high as the violent protest has lasted three days with the government trying to cushion the effects of the price hike in fuel on the economy.

Mobile Telecoms provider, Econet sent messages to subscribers, informing them of the directive of the government to restore internet connectivity after a three-day internet shutdown.

“Dear valued customer, Please be advised that the internet is back online under a directive that the Facebook, YouTube, Whats App, Twitter will remain closed until further notice. Any inconvenience is sincerely regretted,” said the mobile service provider.

The fuel price hike situation led to a responsive spike in the prices of goods and services in Zimbabwe.

While the violent protests lasted since Monday, three people who include a police officer have reportedly lost their lives, while 600 were arrested.

This led to a government brute response to shutdown internet and social media in order to clamp down on the plans and activities of the protesters.

Locals feel the government is violating their rights to access credible information.

It is reported that the internet and social media shutdown has affected a lot of businesses negatively, as well as the government and media firms who rely on the use of technology to run their daily activities.

The nation records this as the most violent public unrest since the 1998 food riots.
