The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu has appealed to the National Assembly to expedite actions in the passage of the amendment of the electoral laws.

The INEC Chairman was speaking during a consultative meeting with professional bodies and labour unions held at the Commission’s Headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday.

Professor Yakubu while notifying stakeholders of forthcoming legislative by-elections in some state and federal constituencies, said the need to create more polling units is borne out of concerns to expand voter access to voting points during elections in Nigeria, which can only be achieved through a comprehensive legal frame work.

Some of the stakeholders who spoke at the forum appealed to the INEC to consider abolishing polling units stationed in palaces of traditional rulers and homes of politicians.

The Commission, however, assured Nigerians of its commitment to begin a fresh continuous voter registration exercise.
