Uzoma Asagwara breaks 150-year Canadian Parliament Record

Uzoma Asagwara a psychiatric nurse and communist activist has recently been announced as one of the Members of the Manitoba Legislature.

This is a new feat as this is the first time a black person will ever emerge as a Member of Parliament by winning the Union Station seat for the NDP.

Uzoma from Nigerian descent has been reported as a queer woman who has consistently been a longtime community activist in Winnipeg, Canada in the legislature and she has the following to say on her victory

Being one of the first Black Member of the Legislative Assembly elected in Manitoba was “wonderful…incredible,” and a “sign that folks are really making sure that our elected officials reflect the communities they serve.”

She is also one of the three Black people who coined a seat at the MLA.
