Just four days into her role as the interim boss of USA Gymnastics, Mary Bono resigned from her position following criticisms and backlash that followed her appointment.
Her resignation statement reads, “It is with profound regret, coupled with a deep love for the sport of gymnastics and respect for those who aspire to be great gymnasts, that I today tendered my resignation.
My withdrawal comes in the wake of personal attacks that, left undefended, would have made leading USAG a liability.”
Bono once worked for a law firm that represented USA Gymnastics and its former team doctor, Larry Nassar, who has been sentenced to over 300 years in prison for sexually abusing gymnasts.
Legendary gymnast, Simone Biles and Olympic gold medallist, Aly Raisman led the criticism of Bono’s Friday appointment as interim president and chief executive of USA Gymnastics.
Bono was criticised for her handling of the fallout from the Larry Nassar abuse scandal, she also appeared to oppose Nike’s commercial campaign with Colin Kaepernick.
