University of Aberdeen to return Benin Bronze to Nigeria

The University of Aberdeen in the United Kingdom has disclosed its intentions to return a Benin Bronze that has been in its custody since 1957 within the next few weeks.

The University stated that because the Bronze left the shores of the country in an immoral manner, it represents the pillaging of cultural treasures linked to the 19th European cultural expansion.

The Benin Bronze which depicts the Oba of Benin in 1897 was among some of the treasure chests of artefacts that were carted away when British forces looted the renowned kingdom.

The proceeds from the heists were mostly sold privately or auctioned by art dealers.

Aberdeen’s Principal and Vice-chancellor noted that the decision is in line with the university’s values as an inclusive and international university.

“It would not have been right to have retained an item of such great cultural importance that was acquired in such reprehensible circumstances. We, therefore, decided that an unconditional return is the most appropriate action we can take, and are grateful for the close collaboration with our partners in Nigeria,” he said

The Nigerian government through its Minister of Information, Lai Mohammed has welcomed the decision while stating that the world anticipates the release of other artefacts that were looted in times past.
