After numerous people died attempting to cross from Morocco to Spain in June, UN rights experts criticized the lack of accountability for the “stark dehumanization of African migrants” on Monday.
One of the worst border attempts in recent memory occurred on June 24, when some 2,000 people, predominantly Sudanese nationals, attempted to get into the Spanish enclave.
At the time, the United Nations rights office reported that at least 23 persons had passed away.
The UN Special Rapporteur on modern forms of racism, racial discrimination, and xenophobia and the working group of experts on people of African origin, however, put the number at least 37 in their statement on Monday.
Despite submitting notifications to the Spanish and Moroccan governments, the experts claimed they have not yet noticed any indications of concrete accountability.
