the European Union’s top diplomat Josep Borrell has said China cannot be a mediator in the war in Ukraine as it is on one side but could play the role of facilitator to reach a peace deal with Russia.
Borrell’s comments echoed the call by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Beijing for the Chinese leader Xi Jinping to talk to the Ukrainian president and know first-hand about the Kyiv’s peace formula.
The only peace plan presented by the interested parts on the table for Borrell is the one presented by Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenskiy.
Zelenskiy demands the withdrawal of Russian troops and restore Ukraine’s territory to the status quo before Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014.
