A campaign by Kenyans on social media for Kiswahili to be recognised by Twitter has borne fruits eventually as Twitter now recognises the language. Before now, tweets made in Swahili was always translated as Indonesian.

Kiswahili is spoken by Kenyans, Ugandans, Tanzanians and some part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This recognition comes with great excitement for the language speakers.

In the past, Kenyans on social media created hashtags like; #SwahiliIsNotIndonesian# and #TwitterRecogniseSwahili# to express their displeasure when Kiswahili tweets were translated as Indonesian.

Twitter is a social media platform with a huge community of Africans and also has served as a space to spearhead campaigns, express concerns, push for reform, outrage and comic reliefs in other cases.
