Over 200,000 people in South Sudan have been displaced due to the flooding along the Nile River resulting in the loss of livelihood and homes for thousands of families.
The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, Peter Mayen has shared that many families are in dire situation and thus called for the provision of food and medical assistance.
The floods hit mainly the Greater Jonglei Region considered as a lifeline for the southern communities.
Many were seen trying to salvage their belongings amidst the floods while others huddled up within the swamps.
The General Secretary, Jonglei Mabior Atem Mabior said the following while canvassing for support for the women and elderly who are now exposed to fresh health hazards
“Flash-floods have severely affected the local population here. It’s a horrible situation to explain. It became worse when the dyke was broken. Waters washed into buildings across the State
capital and as I speak, things are getting worse,” he said.
