Tennis: Nick Kyrgios may pull out of the French Open in September

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios has hinted that he may not take part in the French Open, scheduled for late September after he said chances of traveling to Europe this year were slim to none. Last week the Australian said he will not be taking part in the upcoming US Open tournament in flushing Meadows New York due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Kyrgios who has particularly been vocal about the tournament in the United States said he was not surprised by world number one and 2019 US Open champion Rael Nadal’s decision to pull out of the tournament. In a statement, the world number 40 said It is a very slim chance, he plays in Europe, almost slim to none, to be honest.

He further said he is going to use the opportunity to spend time with his family until there are better circumstances to play. Kyrgios also said he is in doubt of 2021 Australian Open, scheduled for January, as host city Melbourne battles a major outbreak that has resulted in a stay-at-home lockdown and curfew.

Djokovic, Borna Coric Viktor Troicki and Grigor Dimitrov, all tested positive for COVID-19, after taking part in an exhibition event, where COVID-19 guidelines were not observed. World number one and 2020 Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic, including Austrian Dominic Thiem, Coric, and Alexander Zverev have all been criticized by Kyrgios for hosting and taking part in an exhibition.

He said their behaviour during these critical times, has not been of good character, especially coming from some of the sports’ leaders, by putting lives at risk.
