The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, says it has spent 1.63 billion dollars to expand transmission capacity to 8, 100 megawatts.

The Managing Director of the company, Usman Mohammad, told journalists in Abuja that the project was possible under the transmission programme.

In order to optimize the use of electricity produced by generation companies, the distribution and transmission companies are expected to invest in distribution networks and capacity.

So far, the TCN’s investment in transmission infrastructure is 1.63bn dollars, making capacity to rise from about 5,000 megawatts in three years to 8.100mw.

However, the achievement in the transmission sector will not be complete without the complementary role of the distribution companies. For instance, several transformers have been installed across the network but not enough lines to carry power to those transformers.

But ultimately, the electricity consumer wants electricity supplied at affordable rates.
