The International Food and Agricultural Development, IFAD, has commended Taraba State Governor, Darius Ishaku, on his contributions towards the economic growth of agriculture in the country.

At least,300, 000 farmers in Taraba State are supported by a partnership between the Taraba State Government and IFAD.

Taraba State produces at least 80, 000 metric tonnes of rice yearly; contributing millions of dollars to the country’s domestic market.

The IFAD Market Advisor, Fatima Buhari, who is also the daughter of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari said the output is a result of the resolve by the State government to support farmers in the state.

She also commended the consistent payment of counterpart funds by the Taraba State Government, to sustain the partnership with IFAD.

Taraba State Governor said that with the right support, the state can multiply its agricultural output, to support the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

The Comptroller of Nigeria’s Customs for Taraba and Adamawa Area Commands, Ishak Ganiyu, however, said smuggling of foreign rice into the country remains a challenge.

According to IFAD, Taraba State is now one of the leading rice-producing states in the country.
