Sudan given 3 months to reform – African Leaders

African leaders have given Sudan’s ruling military council three months to reform the government, and return power to civilian rule.

The decision was taken at the African Leaders meeting which held on Tuesday in Cairo.

Sudan’s Transitional Military Council (TMC) took over power after President Omar al-Bashir was overthrown on April 11.

Failure to hand over power to civilian rule would risk the country’s membership from the African Union.

The TMC has resisted pressure to hand power to civilians, proposing a technocrat government for an interim period of two years.

This decision has been resisted by protesters, who claim this move would ultimately leave power in the hands of the military.
