Wildfires raged overnight on Sunday (August 14) across Spain, boosted by strong winds and high temperatures.

Military Emergency Unit (UME) forces were deployed at the Moncayo wildfire and helped to “keep the fire within the perimeter overnight”, UME said on Twitter on Monday (August 15).

The wildfire started in the province of Zaragoza, northeastern Spain, on Saturday (August 13), threatening homes and forcing the evacuation of at least 1,500 local residents. The fire was being fanned by strong winds and burned 8,000 hectares (19,800 acres) in less than 24 hours according to preliminary data, Aragon’s regional president Javier Lambán told the media on Sunday.

The fire in Vall d’Ebo, near Alicante, remained active on Monday after a thunderstorm on Saturday sparked a fire that burned at least 3,500 hectares, forcing at least 1,000 locals to evacuate their homes.
