Somalia cases jump to 756

Somalia’s COVID-19 confirmed cases spike to 756 as the Health Ministry confirmed 34 new cases on Monday, May 4. According to Somalia’s health minister, 27 of the recent confirmed cases were in Banadir. This is an administrative area that covers Mogadishu. 17 others were in the regional Puntland state. Fawziya Abikar disclosed.

The country’s death poll is also now at 35 as 3 people recently gave in to the pandemic disease. 17 people recently recovered from the virus, the country has a total number of 61 recovered patients.

Somalia has limited capacity to battle the virus as a result of the nation’s weak health system which is not overburdened as a result of the outbreak. According to a recent report from the World  Health Organization (WHO), Somalia may have to make a hard decision during this critical time to balance the burdening demands of responses to the pandemic disease while still maintaining essential service delivery to savage the weak health system from collapsing.

Somalia’s government has also put measures in place like several other countries as they continue to battle the virus. Schools are closed, domestic and international flights are halt and large gatherings are banned as citizens are advised to continue physical distancing.
