Sky to end Team Sky sponsorship in 2019

Media and telecommunications giant, Sky has announced it will withdraw its backing of Team Sky at the end of 2019.

Team Sky, launched in January 2010, has been a major force to reckon with in cycling; with 322 victories and eight Grand Tour triumphs.

The team has produced six of the last seven winners of the Tour de France – Sir Bradley Wiggins, Chris Froome and Geraint Thomas.

Team Sky and Sky had enjoyed a successful partnership but the various highs have also been enmeshed with various controversies and scandals – allegations of cheating.

The chairman of Team Sky, Graham McWilliam said the decision to end the broadcaster’s involvement with the cycling team had been the team’s decision.
