Ahmad Lawan the President of the Senate implored World Bank to help Nigeria acquire the looted funds kept in banks abroad. This was on the evening of March 17, when Lawani hosted the new World Bank Country Director for Nigeria.

According to the President of the Senate, it hasn’t been easy recovering these stolen funds stashed in banks abroad. This sad situation has affected Nigeria and also alleviated its poverty.

For a developing country like Nigeria, these unrecovered stashed up looted funds are important to the country. He also stated that some of these powerful countries abroad will protect these looted monies and make it difficult to get back.

Lawan made known that the pandemic disease sweeping the world is taking a toll on the country as funds can’t be generated for the implementation of the 2020 budget.

The country is supposed to take a loan of 17 billion from China which has one of the best economies in the world, but the outbreak of this novel coronavirus makes it unsure as every country is affected by this.

According to Lawani, the promise of the country’s President to remove 100 million Nigerians from poverty in 10 years is still feasible and can be achieved with adequate help from the World Bank.

He also made reference to India, China, and Brazil that has achieved such feat. He stated that giving loans and grants to Nigeria is good, but technical support is just as important.

“It is an opportunity for us to have your thoughts on where you will like to see us direct our support having in mind, our ultimate mission is to help eliminate poverty.” Chaudhur, World Bank Country Director for Nigeria stated.
