Yesterday, Tuesday,  the Senate instructed the Nigerian Federal Government to urgently cancel the privatisation of the power sector that was carried out during the administration of the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2013.

The Senate insists that if the power sector remains in the hands of the private sector, Nigeria may not have a consistent power supply in the next 10 years.

Because of this perception, Ahmed Lawan, the Nigeria senate president has called on the Federal Government to review the privatization of the power sector.

He said that in 2013 when the power sector was handed over to the private sector they expected an improvement in the country’s power supply. The government expected about 10,000 megawatts of electricity supplied daily in the hands of the new owners, and that the privatisation has failed.

In 2017, President Muhammadu Buhari already disclosed that the power sector cannot just be transferred back into the hands of the Federal Government because it’s a complex investment with dire consequences which may arise.
