panic buying for coronavirus

Following the first confirmed case of the COVID-19 virus, Rwandans filled stores, shops, and supermarkets as they tried to buy in bulk from fear of the virus. The case of bulk buying is in fact not a new thing in places where the tally of people infected with the virus is high.

Rwanda government has, however, addressed the issue of bulk buying as unnecessary and in fact not a good idea. Buying in bulk following fear of the outbreak will only result to increase in demand for goods and products which will undoubtedly result in a hike in prices of products.

Goods will become more expensive following the high demand. According to the government, there are no plans for closing shops, stores, and supermarkets. The Minister of Trade and Industry, Soraya Hakuziyaremye, confirmed that goods and products will still be shipped in as the supply chain remains open. Store owners also would be open with stocks available to be sold out.

Rwanda Minister of Trade on Saturday inspected the market and made known that importers are working to import goods and products from outside the country.

As gathered, a huge number of these importers revealed that their suppliers in China have resumed work as service order is in progress. While others stated that they found other means since China’s production was experiencing tough moments.
