Residential areas in the Russian-controlled Ukrainian city of Donetsk have been hit by shelling with Russian-installed officials blaming the strike on Ukraine.

According to the Russian-backed mayor of Donetsk, Alexei Kulemzin, the city was shelled four times with MLRS rockets.

Several residential areas were affected and power lines damaged as the result.

Kulemzin blamed Ukrainian artillery for the attack but there was no immediate Ukrainian response.

Reuters was unable to independently verify the number of casualties.
