Reuters: Somalia’s plane crash carrying COVID-19 relief items may have been shot down

A plane crashed in Somalia on Monday which claimed the lives of the 6 people on board. This plane was carrying supplies necessary for battling coronavirus. The unfortunate incident was made known by Mohamed Salad, the country’s transport minister.

Although the cause of the crash remains undisclosed by the minister, a witness as gathered from Reuters news agency mentioned that plane was shot down to crash. The Foreign Affairs Ministry in a message to the Somalia Authorities requested for answers and explanations over the crash that happened in Bardale.

In the same breath, Kenya also requested an explanation from Somalia authorities for the crash that happened in an area monitored by the Ethiopian troops. Transport Minister ordered a unit to investigate the unfortunate incident while he made known that international assistance would be received with open arms.

The country’s former minister of defence, Abdirashid Abdullahi Mohamed made known that a witness had told him that the plane before it crashed was going to land but turned around again as a result of wildlife on the airfield. It was however shot down in the process. He also provided images of the crashed plane and the names of the people on board.

The people on the plane include the pilot and co-pilot who flew the plane, another pilot who is in training, and two other employees working for the airline.  All are now deceased. According to the Transport Minister, only five of the six bodies were recovered.
