A group of Israeli researchers have discovered that the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine may be able to protect its recipients from a COVID-19 infection. Israel is currently leading the world in terms of vaccinating its citizens, over 2.6 million citizens have received both doses of vaccines. As of today, over 200 million vaccines have been administered globally.
The vaccine currently being rolled out in the country since December 2020 is reportedly 89.4% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed infections. Almost half of the residents in Der Spiegel, Israel have taken at least one shot of the vaccine. The Israeli authorities also disclosed that the Pfizer vaccine is 99% effective at preventing deaths from the virus.
The results if indeed confirmed, will be great progress in stopping the transmission of the disease which has been highly contagious and virulent. It also suggests that asymptomatic people will be unable to spread the coronavirus.
This will make Pfizer/BioNTech the first COVID-19 immunization method that can curb the spread of the virus. The Pfizer/BioNTech researchers have disclosed that they are working on a real-world analysis data to corroborate the data from Israel and will publish the details once complete.
