Petitions Flood Kano Election Tribunal

Following the conclusion of the supplementary election in Kano State, attention is now shifting to the Election Petition Tribunal.

Some candidates and political parties that participated in the National Assembly elections have already filed their petition before the Tribunal. Aggrieved parties in the state assembly election have till March 31 to file their petitions or forfeit their rights.

The secretariat of the Tribunal was busy preparing petitioners’ case files as well as serving respondents with the court processes.

In one petition, Tajo Usman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, is challenging the election of Sani Ma’aruf of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as member-elect to represent Ungogo/Minjibir in the House of Representatives.

Time for filing of the petition against National Assembly elections has lapsed. The election was held on February 23. The time frame for the filing of petitions against state assembly election will also lapse on Sunday.

The Electoral Act provides for 21 days after the declaration of election results for an election petition to be filed, and the Tribunal shall deliver judgment within 180 days.
