Osinbajo visits Fasoranti, says FG will deploy soldiers to highways

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo on Sunday morning paid a condolence visit to the leader of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, Pa Reuben Fasoranti, in Akure, Ondo State.

The VP visited the 94-year-old Afenifere leader over the death of his daughter who was killed by some suspected herdsmen on Friday.

Osinbajo said the Federal Government would explore all options, including deploying soldiers on the highways, towards addressing the growing cases of security challenges in Nigeria.

He lamented at the massive tragedy and added that security agencies have been tasked with ensuring the perpetrators of the crime are apprehended and brought to justice. Osinbajo, in addition, prayed for the family.

Senate commiserates with Fasoranti

The Senate on Sunday condole with the family of Afenifere leader and elder statesman, Reuben Fasoranti, over Friday’s murder of his daughter in Ondo State.

The Senate in a statement by its Ad-hoc Chairman on Media and Public Affairs, Sen. Adedayo Adeyeye, described the gruesome killing of the 58-year-old woman as very sad, devastating and a worrisome development.

Adeyeye said the Senate was disturbed by the spate of incessant attacks and wanton killings of citizens either by hired assassins, herdsmen, kidnappers and or other men of the underworld.

He said the perpetrators of the heinous crime wreaked havoc on the lives and properties of innocent citizens in the country.

He said measures to prevent future occurrence of such incidence should be put in place by improving the security architecture on Nigeria’s highways, at social gatherings and at worship centers nationwide.

Civil societies, statesmen condemn murder, call for urgent national dialogue

Nigerian statesmen and leaders under the aegis of top pan-Nigerian groups, the Pro National Conference Organisations (PRONACO) and the Project Nigeria Movement (PNM), have condemned the killing of Funke Olakunrin and called for an urgent national political dialogue.

Olakunrin, who is the daughter of Pan-Yoruba movement Afenifere leader Reuben Fasoranti, was murdered on Friday by gunmen believed to be herdsmen, an act that has sparked outrage.

Describing the murder as dastardly, wicked and ungodly, both groups said the murder was unacceptable and unbearable, “as it is capable aggravating the already tensed situation in the Southwest and foisting unwanted civil strife on the country”.

The group however, called on President Buhari, Chairman of the Governors Forum, Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State and National Leader of the ruling APC, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu to urgently put a strong machinery in motion for National political engagements to prevent a breakdown of law and order over the cruel and criminal killings in Southwest by armed Fulani robbers and bandits.

PRONACO is a pan-Nigerian movement initiated under the leadership of the late Anthony Enahoro and the Nobel laureate Professor Wole Soyinka to find solutions to the nation’s challenges, while Project Nigeria Movement is a coalition of civil society groups led by respected Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ben Nwabueze.
